I know, I know how very cliché of me, new year new me and all that! But I can’t help it I’m a sucker for a clean slate, a new beginning, a fresh start, whatever you want to call it. So yes I have been thinking about my goals for this coming year. In previous years I think my problem has been that the goals I set have been too broad, not specific enough and so ultimately pretty unachievable. This year I am setting achievable and measurable goals that I can actually tick off my list as I go, so come next December I’m not sat thinking why was I not more productive this year?
Also being the organisation freak, we all know I am, by now I have split my resolutions into categories. I thought I would share my goals with you for two reasons, one because it may help inspire you to make yours and two because this is my written proof to myself that right now at the start of 2017 I am promising myself to give them all a good go.
I’ll get the clichés out the way first, yes like most I want to lose a bit of weight. However I am planning to tackle this in a different way to most years after I have over indulged at christmas and feel about 3 stone heavier than at the end of November. Instead of being too strict with myself and punishing myself for eating some chocolate or one or two Oreos, I’m getting myself more in the mindset of wanting to put good wholesome foods into my body and be more active in general. These things make me feel a million times better anyway and dropping a dress size is just an added bonus.
Meditate 3 times a week
As I mentioned in a previous post I have recently really been enjoying meditating and I have seen an improvement in my mental health since doing so. Despite these amazing results I do struggle to stick to doing it every day especially when I’m busy, which is silly because when I’m busy and stressed is 100% when I would gain the most benefits. So I am making a pact with myself to meditate three times a week, any days will do as long as I spare myself 10 minutes to click on my HeadSpace app and make time for my mind to slow down.
As you may know I go to Drama School full-time and dance is part of my curriculum there, however there is also a great dance studio at a theatre local to my house in Birmingham that I have started going to with some friends. I find it easy to skip it and just go home instead after a long day at BSA but I want to really make the effort this year to go at least once a week to one of their classes, to both add to my fitness regime and also to improve my dancing skills. Fitness doesn’t have to be just running on a treadmill or lifting weights, doing anything that gets you out of breath and sweaty is great for your body and often great for clearing your mind too. So why not try out a new yoga class, or join that kick boxing class you’ve always wanted to try.
Post every week
During my first year of Drama School I seemed to find I had a lot of free time to write lots of posts and I had a big window which let in good enough light to take pictures in my room. However moving into a house for my second year I have really struggled to take photos as my room is so dark all the time and I have also been so busy that my blog has been pushed to the back of my long list of things to do. Although I will be just as busy if not more this coming term I am going to try my hardest to get up more regular content. At least a post a week is my aim (we shall see how that works out) but ultimately just putting more time aside for blogging as it is one of my favourite things to do and is such a great break from Drama School and other aspects of life when I need it.
Make regular YouTube content
Making YouTube videos is something I have always wanted to do, I enjoy watching them and have done for years. There are some things that I want to post about on here that I come to trying to write down and just think I could explain so much better verbally. I have a channel already set up, sat there waiting for content and recently I have added some singing videos to it, but I want to make is a more active platform. I haven’t quite decided what content I want to post so for now it’s going to be a mixture of travel blogs, singing videos and then eventually chatty video to run alongside the sorts of things I talk about on here. It’s going to be a big trial and error process, I think, but I am excited to add another string to my bow and hopefully it can become a more permanent platform.
Reach the next milestone
This is pretty self-explanatory, but I just want to reach the next mile stone in terms of viewers and subscribers and also in terms of increasing the number and variety of brands I work with. I feel so lucky when brands ask to work with me and it is one of my favourite things to do on this blog so featuring more collaborations and widening my topics of discussion is something I am very keen to do.
See my friends more
This is a pretty simple one but I just want to ensure I am seeing my friends as often as possible and making the most of the time we have on the rare occasions we are all in the same county let alone the same city.
Read before bed
Me and books have a love hate relationship. I am either 100% committed and can’t put them down, or they sit on my bookshelf with a book mark on page 11 that hasn’t moved in six weeks. I’m not the worlds best reader so I’m not going to tell myself I have to read a book a week or anything like that because I know I won’t be able to so what would be the point in setting myself up for failure, but I do want to try to read for 20-30 minutes before bed. I am terrible for being on my phone or laptop until I drop off which is meant to mean you don’t sleep swell, so as an added bonus to getting through some novels I might start sleeping better.
Writing music is something that I have also wanted to do but stupidly never actually really given it ago, I think I just assumed I would be rubbish and so why bother, but enough of that negative attitude. In 2017 I want to really give writing a go, whether that is just some lyrics here and there of some full length songs I am lucky enough to be surrounded my ridiculously talented people every day at Drama School so why not make the most of that and the musical facilities I have and write a song or two. So why not do something this year that you have always wanted to, maybe you’ve been too scared to in the past or thought ‘nahh’ I’d be no good at that and talked yourself out of it, what’s the worst that could happen!
Let me know in the comments if you have made any new year’s resolutions or goals and how you plan to stick to them? I’m feeling pretty ready for 2017, so lets make it the best year yet!
