Turning Envy Into Motivation

Turning Envy Into Motivation

No one likes feeling jealous, it’s a horrible feeling. It causes people to be mean and often say hurtful things they don’t actually mean. I am a firm believer that 99% of the time if anyone is being mean to you it’s out of jealousy. Take a minute now to think about the last time someone may have put you down, or said something unkind. Now think about whether you might have something they don’t. More often than not the two things correlate. Similarly, I’m sure we can all think of times we might have felt jealous of someone else. Maybe they got the job we wanted, or got an invite to an event we didn’t. It’s horrible.

Jealousy doesn’t have to be this big green monster that eats away at you. You can turn that awful feeling into something positive. As hard is it might be, next time you feel envy creeping up on you, grab a notepad and pen and write down what it is you’re jealous of. Then instead of this having a pity party for one, put the title ‘list of things to achieve’ on the top of that page and make it happen. Use that envy to fuel you into working for what you want. Turn that feeling into inspiration. Trust me, you’ll feel a whole lot better about yourself if you come up with a plan to achieve that goal, rather than sitting around having a moan about why you should have been chosen instead.

You also have to remember to give yourself credit for what you have achieved. Maybe you didn’t get that exact job offer, or that many shares on a post, but what you’re doing is still worth noting. It’s so easy to get focused on other peoples achievements at forget about your own. So after you’ve finished making a list of your future goals, take a moment to reflect on what you have already achieved. Let’s face it, the chances are that someone out there is feeling jealous of you. So don’t be so hard on yourself. Relax. Take a deep breath, and feel proud of what you have accomplished.
