As promised your first dose of Motivational Mondays from yours truly. Whether you’re on your way to school, work or just at home eating your breakfast there is nothing like a good motivational chit chat to start your week. This week I want to talk about success.
I was at one of my favourite vegan restaurants a few weeks ago with my boyfriend Harry and we were chatting about work, particularly success at work and he asked me what I deemed a success. At first, I thought well success surely means the same to everyone it’s a word that means… well what does it mean? What I deem as having ‘made it’ or being successful is certainly not going to be the same as what the guy on the table next to us sees it as. Success can be measured in a multitude of different ways; recognition, fame, fortune and I’m sure everyone has their own definition. A week or so after this conversation I was out with a friend who turned to me saying ‘your photography is so good, I can’t wait for you to be successful’, now maybe I’m overreacting but this really struck a nerve. Of course, I have a million things I want to achieve, that I haven’t achieved yet but that’s not to say I’m not successful in my own right already. I feel like unless you have 3.2 million followers on Instagram, are earning 200K a year and getting free holidays to the Maldives every other week people think you haven’t ‘made it’ yet. Of course, all that stuff is great, and if that’s you then good on you, you’re smashing it! But that doesn’t mean that if you don’t have those followers counts of free trips you aren’t also smashing life.
There is nothing wrong with anybody’s view of success if money is what drives you, good for you. If your aim is to be famous, go for it. As long as you have a goal that gets you out of bed in the morning it’s great we should not let others dictate our success and not let other people tell us if and when ‘we have made it’. Success is a personal thing to each individual, letting other people dictate what that should be is only going to knock you off the path to your own success.
